HORSES FOR HEROES

WPD Mounted Patrol

The Wichita Police & Fire Foundation funded two new and needed Clydesdale horses for the Wichita Police Mounted Unit.

In addition to the initial funding of the Clydesdales, the foundation was able to help adopt a beautiful new Quarter Horse, “Gem”, from Hope in the Valley Equinine Rescue as part of the mounted unit in May of 2024.

One more addition was made to the Clydesdales as the foundation secured funding for another Clydesdale chestnut mare “Bobbi” that was purchased in June 2024 through Cowskin Creek Clydesdales.

One Clydesdale can perform the crowd control of 15 officers on foot.

WPFF supplied 16 saddle pads, 32 reflective leg wraps, and 16 reflective chest collar covers for the entire mounted unit. This new gear and tack makes the unit horses and officers more visible, safe, and secure on patrol.

In addition, the Wichita Police & Fire Foundation was able to secure donations for twenty-four new helmets - enhancing safety for the officers and the public.

REMEMBERING SCOUT

Scout, WPD Mounted Horse 2014-2022

On March 1, 2022 the Wichita Police Department Mounted Unit sadly lost a much loved member. Scout had been a dedicated police horse and an integral part of the unit since 2014. Retired WPD Sgt. Clark Bolan and former Unit Commander said of Scout, "Scout was fearless, not afraid of anything. Rode him in some tough situations on patrol and he always did great. He was my horse until I retired". Rest In Peace, Scout.

While the day to day upkeep of the Mounted Unit is accounted for within the Police Department’s budget, there is no funding available to purchase a new horse and needed equipment for the Mounted Unit.

With your help, a new member of the unit can soon join the force and will be able to serve the Wichita Police Department. This new mount will become a beloved part of community festivals and patrol the Old Town Wichita streets, poking his nose into shops and stands to ensure all is well.
